55 or 65 amp. does it matter?

Good Monday morning to all.

Please give advice if you will.

82, 240d elec. system does not appear to be charging.

voltage reading stays at 12.1 volts with car running and not running.

is there a fusable link anywhere that could be blown?
I checked all fuses in fuse box. everything too small in there. (I can't find my Haynes manual)

Can I safely assume that alternator has given up the ghost?

My car has manual everything, sunroof, windows etc.
also has rear defoger and AC.

Some folks recommend getting the upgraded STARTER when replacing, does that apply to ALTERNATORS too?
Assuming I have a 55amp. should a 65amp. be any better for any particular reason?

Please advise..... thanks in advance!

Dave240,

You don't need a larger alternator unless you add more electrical equipment than the car came with.

Probably the brushes are worn out in your alternator. Do a search on alternator brushes and you will find out how to check and replace them. You don't even have to remove the alternator.
