Window switch removal

I rolled the rear passenger window half way down this morning on my '82 300SD but it would not subsequently roll up. I was able to get it to roll the rest of the way down but now I am stuck with it that way. No unusaul noises from the motor when I try to roll it up. All the other windows work and no fuses blown. I am guessing the switch is either bad or dirty. Does anyone know how to remove this switch from the console? When I depress the switch in either direction, I see some indents exposed in the corners of the portion that is sticking up. Are these somehow used to pry the switch out? I would like to avoid cracking the wood on the console more than it already is.

Thanks for any advice on how to gets these out.

Pry it out very carefully with a small screwdriver.

Thanks for the reply Speedy. Does just the single window switch come out or do both right window switches come out together as a single unit? That is the way I see them sold by Fastlane.

For some reason, it mysteriously started working again. I shot some contact cleaner into the spaces around the switch after that. I still want to take the whole thing out at some point and clean it though.

Both right switches are one piece and same with the lefts. You should pry open the rocker part of the switch and clean that out. You'll be surprised how much gunk gets in there over the years. Make sure not to loose the tiny ball bearings inside.

Be careful not to mix up the wires when you take the switch apart.
Don't ask me how I know that can be a problem. Just draw a little diagram of the wiring and mark the colors.

GO Back to the fuses first!!

Same thing happened to me about three years ago, and I was ready to order the switch when the following routine saved the day for me!

Maybe, just Maybe you can save yourself some trouble and cost if you go back to the fuse box, remove the fuse and GENTLY buff the contacts and the fuse ends with a little bit of steel wool or emery cloth to remove any oxidation. Then stick the fuses back in and try the switch again.

Still running the same fuses and got three more years out of the switch...lets see now thats makes 21 years. When are they ever going to build these cars to last? :^)

Good luck with yours,,,and thanks to everyone for the removal /replace guidance. Y'all are just great on this board!!!
