190DT on vegoil

This is my first post so I should introduce myself. Dana Linscott..from Minnesota. I design and install simple vegoil conversions for diesels. That's right...I run diesels on waste fryer oil. It smells like a barbeque..chicken one day..pork the next. It is simpler than it sounds and my fuel costs around a dime a gallon.

Anyway....

I found my dream car recently...except for the mileage(190K)...and cracked dash, and myriad of other small things to fix. A 190DT! When I drove one a few months ago I knew I had to have one. Downright sporty for a diesel!

The main problem is the transmission will not shift to OD and slips in second when cold. I suspect it is time for a rebuild.

What should I expect this to cost at an independant transmission shop?

I can do the rest of the work myself but I wonder also if there are some good parts suppliers on the internet that anyone can recommend. I have saved up to half on my SAAB parts by not going to the dealer...and it is quicker since the nearest dealer is over 2 hours away.

I appreciate any help you can give me here...and am happy to answer any questions you may have as well.

Thanks,
Dana

Greetings Dana!

R Leo here from the SVO board. Welcome to the MercedesShop forum Dana!

Not a lot of alternate fuels folks around these parts so the subject on your post will probably not generate much response. I suggest reposting the same question with something like "Problems with 190D transmission slipping" as a subject.

That said, there is an almost infinite knowledge base within these virtual walls and you will ultimately get an answer to your question. In the meantime, you might try searching the forum with the search tool that you access at the upper right corner of the page. The info you need is probably already in here somewhere.

I own two oil-burners and would be dead in the water without this forum to rely on.

The sponsor of this forum is a reliable and reasonably economical provider of MBZ parts. Look at the top of the page for their links to FastLane and Parts Shop. Also, PM me off line and I'll provide you links to some alternate suppliers as well.

Good luck and welcome!
R Leo

SVW/WVO as fuel

Fourumites,
I can attest to Dana's abilities with alternate fuels. He's done copious amounts of experimentation and research on the use of straight vegetable oil (SVO) and, waste fry oil (WFO) as fuels and made the tangible results of that experimentation available at a very reasonable cost.

If you are interested in SVO/WFO fuels you should check out his postings on this site:

R Leo

Kaput trannies have been discussed many times here. Benzmac usually suggests swapping for a factory rebuilt, mostly because of the 4 year, 50K mile warranty. The cost is not outrageous if you buy the tranny from them and do the job yourself or have an indy do it. BTW, the warranty covers parts and labor, even if you did not have a dealer do the job the first time. You can also usually get a discount on dealer parts prices by joining the Mercedes Club of America at MBCA. Even if you don't go the dealer route, the MBCA membership will get you The Star magazine, which will have ads for parts suppliers.

Welcome to the board. I hit the biodiesel BB a couple of times a week just lurking. I'm very interested in this conversion. I drive a 190D 2.2 5 spd manual (amongst other things--when they run) on a daily basis.

I've heard that the old style injection pumps that MB's use are more durable than the new PD style that VW uses. Either way, I'd sure be interested in your experiences with SVO/WVO long term as it pertains to coking, pump durability, and forgetting to purge (DOH!!!!).

I am interested in running the biod but in reality I would need probably another few hours/week to make it happen. I may eventually get around to it.

Thank you all for your help.

I have managed to acess the archives and have done a search on the tranny problem.

I MAY have lucked out. Maybe. The independent dealer that sold the 190DT to me was so sure that "nothing major is wrong with the tranny" that he wrote that the tranny would be fixed into the sales contract. His shop then informed him it needed new clutchpack and bit of other work...so the work is being done at the dealers expense. We will see!

Mean while I found rebuilt trannys for $1,395+shipping at one of the suggested websites...just in case.

Thanks again for your help. What a great forum! If anyone has any questions on running diesels on vegoil..please feel free to contact me. I have nearly 20,000 miles on my Ford pickup running Waste Vegetable Oil from the local chinese buffet.

Dana
