Infared problem

My remote will not work if I am more than 4 feet away from vehicle, also when I lock mycar the red light blinks for ten seconds the book says it should stop in 3 and will continue to blink to 10 seconds if theres a problem. The doors and trunk lock fine. What could be wrong. I also put new batteries in remote no improvement.
