Gilly, Dr. Diesel, ect....Help please.
extensive service done at 52K, including oil change , fuel filters, air filters change which had been done only 5K previously. I had the car in the shop to replace MAS, so I just had the oil and filters changed for convenience before FSS recommended.
car now has 55K. took a 750 mi round-trip this weekend. yesterday, the "Service Engine in 1100 mi." message came on upon startup. 50 mi. later the "Service Engine in 1000 mi" message came on upon startup. I understand this message is specific to oil change/condition. This morning, I got no "Service Engine" message upon startup. I keep up with service intervals independant of FSS for obvious reasons. my service receipts always indicate that my indi 'resets' the FSS and checks and clears all other codes. Any ideas? I have called my indi, and he wants to scan it with his new $12K scanner and charge me I am sure. However, he says, "Maybe I forgot to reset the FSS." I won't let him charge me to scan if if he finds out he didn't reset the FSS, but he may find something else that could cause this message or message inconsistency. |

The very first time my car was in for service I thought to myself, "I wonder what mileage the FSS starts at." So I hit the button. Guess what, they had forgotten to reset it. Always check as soon as you get in the car.

Dumb question obviously Rick,,,,,,but what button are you referring to?
PS: I am back from lunch now--the Service in 1000 comes on with each start up. I must have still been asleep this morning. That actually makes me feel better, because I would rather the FSS have not been reset than to have some sort of electrical problem Last edited by narwhal; 05-19-2003 at 02:22 PM. |

Arrrg, you had to ask that! It's something I do without even thinking about it, and I don't have the car with me today to do it. I think it's the '0' button. Hit it twice in rapid succession to get the current FSS mileage. Either that or the R button, but I'm about 80% sure it's the 0.
BTW, my check engine light came on over the weekend. Hope it's not the dreaded MAS. Dealer appointment tomorrow will tell the tale.

Thanks Rick, it is definitely the "0" button. It confirms the Service message I am getting. The indi just forgot to reset the FSS, I guess.
The MAS is about $240 where I live and the labor was about $100. The symptoms were, I would get cruising about 60 mph, and then press the accelerator and it just wouldn't go. It would eventually accelerate, but very, very slowly. I couldn't really tell anything was wrong below 60 mph, because of the lag inherently associated with turbo boost. You should be able to tell if it is MAS from your acceleration. It literally feels like something is physcially holding the car from behind when you goose it. If not, I would say you have some other problem. Hope it is not bad--let me know the diagnosis if you don't mind. |

I had the CEL come on when my MAS malfunctioned. Didn't get the same symptoms as narwhal, at first no difference in driving was noticeable. But later noted slightly worse fuel consumption and some loss of power.
It was very easy to fix . See this thread

CEL Case Closed
Short Version: Check Engine Light turned itself off.
Long Version: My partner drove the car without me Saturday night and had to put fuel in it. He called to tell me the CEL was on right after fueling (hint hint). The car sat Sunday and Monday while I made an appointment. I called home Monday afternoon and asked him to check the fuel tank cap. He said it was tight but reseated it anyway. I started it when I got home, but the light stayed on and I only let it run for a few seconds. I drove it this morning and the light went off after 5 minutes or so. Went on to the dealer anyway, but the service writer said check the fuel cap and call him if it somes back on.

In my case, the CEL also turned On and Off on its own for quite awhile, and each time stayed On longer. New gas cap did not help. Finally replaced MAS and no more CEL.
Hope the gas cap solves your problem

richunters, you were right on the money. The light came on again last weekend. Dealer just replaced the MAS under warranty. Of course I had to let them come to that conclusion on their own.
