300D runs warm

I have a 1985 300D California car that runs warm. Gauge indicated average temp is about 100 C. It climbs when hot outside. We have replaced thermostat, radiator and the water pump. There has been no appreciable change. I know it seems to run warm the hood steams when it rains (more than I have seen before).

Any thoughts?

If you've replaced radiator, water pump, and themostat....and ensured there's no air trapped in the coolant, the next thing I'd do is make sure that the 100C temp you're seeing is accurate.

Whether you replace the temp sending unit or use another device (like an IR temp reader pointing directly at the temp sending unit location) try to verify that the 100C temp is REAL.

If it is really running that hot, then you're still ok. 100C is on the high side of *OK* operating temperature.....but not dangerously high by any standard. Sorry I can't point you to the next thing to check after this.

Yes, I understand that this temp is high normal. I am just worried about the creep in the summer. It climbed a lot during the hot days of summer last year and while the pump and radiator have been replaced since, the base has not changed much.

Is it possible that passages are clogged in the block? Is there a flush that could be done? Possible to measure coolant flow?

Why don't you use omly 25% coolant and 75% water? Where do you live? Water is a more efficient coolant.

Alan,

Yes, there are coolant flushes. MB even has their own brand of citric cleaner, but I thought that these citric flushes were more for cleaning the radiators but I may be wrong.

Edge, ja, the higher ratio of water will help some, but I'd rather see him find the actual cause of the problem. Although, the 75/25 thing isn't a bad idea just for the sake of cooling efficiency. I run my cars at about 70/30 year-round in Atlanta....I also throw in a bottle of Water Wetter for addtional cooling efficiency and corrosion protection.
