1981 240D Find

Hey,

I found a 1981 240D with 111,000 miles that is in excellent condition. Color is dark brown (very small rust spots at rear fender behind wheel well and that is all for rust I can detect) with Palomino MB-Tex. A/C that works with R12, power windows, cruise, aftermarket stereo, and the only thing holding me back, an automatic transmission. The price is a little steep, but the present owner has invested some dollars having the head gasket replaced (bought it from someone after they apparently overheated it), which also involved some head rebuilding. Interior is almost like new. The price is $4k, no negotiation room, I tried. PM me if you want to get in touch with the present owner. Jim

Did the imbecile drive the overheated car another 5 miles or more - after the idiot blew the head gasket???

Regarding repair of cars that have been overheated....

One of the worst things anybody can do while replacing head gasket is "plane" the head. A very common error, removing metal beyond close tolerances, raising compression and ultimately causing the engine to self-destruct - or to constantly blow head gaskets.... again and again.

Another mistake mechanics often make, working on cylinder head, is to grind sodium filled valves. This never works in long run, as ground valves self-destruct down the road in about 50k miles or less.

Ask the owner for the name of shop that replaced the head gasket - then speak with mechanic who worked on the car to see what else they did..... If they shaved the cylinder head and ground down the valves, the car is probably not worth owning.

Finally, you've got to ask yourself what happens when coolant mixes with oil. Scoring of Cylinder Bores....Crankshaft and Connecting Rod Bearings..... Piston Wrist Pins????

Oil pump draws from bottom of sump, y'know - where coolant accumulates, being heavier than oil and mixing with the system after gasket is bown.

240DieselDog,

The repair work was done by one of the more experienced mechanics at the local MB dealership. The car is actually being sold by one of his associates (the same guy repaired the head on my 190E 2.3-16, which suffered a burned exhaust valve - the job took a while but he was exceptionally thorough). I would expect the job he did on the 240D was equally thorough in terms of knowledge, skill and craftsmanship.

Since it is an automatic and there are 240Ds with manual transmissions, it is not my cup of tea. Nor my daughter's, so we spent the last few days fixing her car (a 4-speed manual 1982 240D) up for a trip to San Diego next month. Quite a few more items to get to before she leaves. I am going to try some POR 15 on the jacking tubes as they are getting pretty ragged looking. I will post my progress.

Well, the car seems like it is solid. As I said, if it had a manual it probably would have a home here. Jim

Jim,

I tried POR 15 on some rust spots of my 300D. The stuff is great.
