is it R-12 or 134?

How can I tell if the AC has been converted to 134? If so I can recharge it myself instead of paying my mechanics inflated price. Does anyone know the current price of R-12?

thanx, thebern

In addition to leathermangs reply, please see my reply to the same thread in the Tech Help Forum.

Good luck,

I type about 100 words per minute, so my quick reply was quicker than going to the other Forum, copying, coming back and then pasting.

Sorry that this method causes more trouble for others and less for me.

Have a great day,

When I started messing with my 240D I found a 134 connector on the high side and no 134 connector on the low side. When I purchased it I was running 134. I had taken it to my trusty a/c man and he supposedly converted it back to 12 and then that is when I started messing with it. When I removed the high side 134 fitting I found the original schrader valve no longer had the internal "plunger". It was not a pretty site when I removed that 134 fitting:(.

leathermang, the only way you're going to get under $20 a lb on ebay is if you buy a 30lb cannister, last couple of weeks its going well over $20 for a 12oz can.

Or Greg - it may be people like me who got FED UP with riding in a car without a good working a/c in the lower 1/2 of the country and decided to just spend whatever $$ was required to make these systems work:). Keep in mind too the time of year. Wonder if the price will fall back off a little toward the end of the year?

Last I check, the current price at http://www.refrigerantsales.com was $250 for a case of 12 cans of R-12. That's right at $20/can and it includes shipping. Sounds like you could buy a case, use what you need, and sell the remainder for a profit on Ebay...

Of course, you can also buy as 25lb cylinder of Autofrost for $195, spend less money, have colder air, and piss off Larry... :) (Note: That's sarcasm and humor there, just want to make it clear.)

There is a sealed 30 pound cylinder on ebay for $425 buy it now. That's about $14 per pound. Remember $20 per 12 oz. can is actually $26.60 or so per true pound.

As I have said before. The cars requiring R12 are hitting the wrecking yards in large numbers every day. This decreases the demand for R12. With the supply remaining relatively the same and the demand rapidly decreasing, the price is on its way down.

Have a great day,

If it is R134, you can get it for $4.89 per can @ Wal Mart.
That's why I converted my A/C to R134 over a year ago.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2534788498&category=42910

here it is. Shipping is $75.

David,

In the bay area you can get by with a properly converted 134 system in a 123 car. Don't try it in Texas.

Secondly when converting if you don't flush, change oil, change filter drier, evacuate and charge, you are decreasing the life of your system.

Have a great day,
