Thumbs up Oddities at Pick-N-Pull today... 280SEL

Anyone seen a 280SEL? I assume it has the DOHC like the 280E's had in the 123 bodies but stuffed in the 126. It had I recall a 140mph speedo and was a 1984 model. I believe it to be a grey market car, was Astral Silver with a blue interior.

Oh, and did any other MBs other than diesel have the dual belt alt with pulley? If not, I finally found myself one.

Yep it was a grey market. They never made a 280SE/SEL in a 126 for the US Market.

I think the diesel crowd is the oddest collection of folks around... All the V8 W108/W109 and W116 had dual belt power steering pumps. I guess MB was too cheap to put a proper ballbearing on the shaft to handle the sideload....

Were there any 123s at Pick + Pull? Can you recommend any more Dallas area salvage yards?

Fan shroud intact?

Hit Man X,

Did it have an intact fan shroud? If you happen to go back by there, I need one for my 280....maybe we could work out a deal?

Take care,

Thumbs up

brabus -

There are a few 123s there but most are pretty well picked over, just a few assorted bits left inside. There's an old 1971 model out there (220D I think) out there too of all things! For 123s, I can't think of any places in the DFW area. I'd open a phone book and call about. The 126s are easier to find.

JoelS -

the motor was gone and the car's been there for maybe a week. I usually hit the place every few weeks to see what's new out there. I'm pretty certain that shroud was missing. But I'll check again when I go back. The climate control stuff inside was there.

Thanks for the replyHMX.

It would make sense that the shroud is gone...If I was pulling the motor, I'd grab everything in sight!

Thanks again,

Thumbs up

It was an odd car for sure! My Pops came out there with me to hunt parts and he told me what it was I had to ask twice then go look for myself to see what car it actually was!

BTW - there's a 280E locally I may get down the road. Any clue to the HP and TQ figures of it stock?
