another oil thread

BTW, whatever happened to that graphite oil? Arco, wasn't it? Is it still around? Never hear about it anymore. Was all the rage back in the 80's.

No, that's not it. It was a motor oil that came out about the same time as Mobil 1, cost about the same, but I think it was oil based(not synth), but had some kind of graphite additives that was supposed to do the same thing as synth oil, last longer, lubricate better, ect. I remember reading a test report in probably about 1981 or so. They compared it with Mobil1 and regular oil. it was pretty much on par with Mobil1 in performance. I used it in my Pinto that had a built up 2.0L engine. Stuff was black going in, so it always looked dirty.

Think I just answered my own question. Not much on the internet about the stuff, but found this on a Yamaha discussion forum:
"I'm assuming you mean "graphite". Remember Arco Graphite oil? If you don't there's a good reason for it. They put larger amounts of graphite in this oil which would end up in your oil pan. After many changes of this oil, you would end up with a pan full of it. Lost my '79 Chevy pickup truck motor to it. Took off the oil pan and it was about an inch thick in the bottom.
The oil sump was plugged with it also. Not such a good idea."

I'll stop wondering about it now I guess
