Electric odometer....?

I am planning to keep my car forever!!! And I agree, that of the many things there are to worry about in the world.....this is not one of the major ones........but here goes:

The odometer is electric.....if, say, the battery goes dead ....does the odometer reset?

No? Then how does it "remember" what the right numbers are????? I am petrified that once my beautiful car turns 300,000 miles or so......I will walk out one morning and the odometer will read '0000000'!!!

Dumb question, I know. But I am curious about it.

I have no facts as to the MB implementation of the odometer, but I'm a long-time computer guy who can make a pretty good guess. I'd say that they used non-volatile memory for the mileage and that you do not need to worry. This kind of chip retains the data stored in it even without power and they have been around for quite a few years. Keep driving and enjoyng that OM606!

Welcome! Nice to have another enthusiastic W210 member. Keep us posted regarding your car. The cars are so new, this forum is the only way many of us can find out what the problems and dos and don'ts are.

Has anyone ever replaced the stock speedo/odo with an aftermarket new one? Like the ones at the local autozone or Napa.
