Oh boy Harmonic Balancer / Pulley

On the way home tonight I heard a big racket adn immediately shut down the engine. I found the front pully and the Vibration Absorber came loose. There was only a sign of one bolt of the six.

THere is no major damage, although I think several of the threaded holes in the counterweight were damaged.

I think I can get 4 of the six bolts in there.

Question....

Do you think it is safe to put it back together with 4 bolts to drive it about 50 miles to run one criticla errand and to the mechanic?

Thank you for input.

Don

In searching the issue I see it has happened to others. Maybe locktite should be used?

Mine let go while my daughter was coming home from a movie with our "79' 240d. It had only 3 bolt holes in the pulley to begin with so I rotated the pulley to aline it with 3 "new " holes in the balancer. My '79' was designed with 3 bolts. The "80" I just put together was like yours, 6 bolts so that would indicate you might have a chance to go 50 miles with 4, but I gota go with TXBILL and suggest you dont.

In short, don't. I have an 80 240D that is now a parts car due to the harmonic balancer coming loose. I still don't know what was done to this car previously, but the center bolt is a permanent attatchment to the crankshaft, and there's still at least an inch of freeplay - crankshaft facing is shot.

I spoke with the mechanic who said to leave the fan blade off and to tighten the 4 remaining bolts to the counterweight and to drive it into him.

Followed his instructions with no problems gettting it to his garage, where they pulled it all apart, removed the 2 shired bolts and but it back together with a new fan.

I was lucky that when it came apart that it did not do any damage other than cracking a couple of the blades on the fan.

Make sure that your tech is familiar with THIS PARTICULAR HARMONIC BALANCER MOUNTING!!

They do NOT go on with a square key as do most cars. An unfamiliar tech tends to start it in place and draw it in place with the bolt. DON'T DO IT!! Instead of a square key there are two round pins that are tricky to get started right. Make sure everything is lined up perfect before tightening bolt or you could ruin the crankshaft snout.

Good luck,

Being that they have done the work already, is there a way to check to see if it was done right? The work was done at an independent Mercedes garage.

Thank you
Don

If it was done at a Mercedes savvy shop, I expect that they knew how it goes on.

Good luck,

I had my balancer/pulley come off at out 50 mph and it was not a pretty site. Fortunately all I lost was the radiator and the belts. It took me two days to find the balancer after it put dents in the floor board of my car and rolled off a couple 100yrds down the road. It could have been much much worse. They were able to put in a helicoil where one of the bolts was ripped out. They said if that wasnt possible it would need a whole new crank shaft. I'd hesitate to drive it any more that you already have until it is fixed.
