Thumbs up Anyone out by GA wanting an SDL check this...

While looking about for some SD/SDL parts I came upon this on ebay... Click Me 1987 SDL, opening bid of $500. States it threw a rod.

Then also I found this... Now Click Me A complete longblock up by IL.

Play the cards right (provided you have the space, time, and ability) and you'd have a pretty nice ride for not a whole lot of cash. Maybe someone can benefit from this in one form or the other...

GA car is orginally a Maryland car. Maryland is known for salty winter roads and NASTY rust, though this one could have been garaged in the winters for all I know

Yup, but it could be worth checking out...even for a parts car.

That's the second time we have heard of a #10 head.

Someone posted about the same head number a few months ago and it was considered impossible.

I too thought that was quite odd also, actually assumed it was a typographical error.

Was it perhaps a factory replacment head like the No 15 or a very early 1986 one?

I don't know what it is, but, with two separate incidents of a #10 head, it can't be summarily dismissed anymore.

Can anybody run the p/n and see what they get??

The 0 probably is an 8 that wasn't stamped properly.

Heck I wish that car was closer I would buy it in a second. For $500 I could get a good head and trans, an AC compressor would be nice as well.

If the engine "threw a rod", what is normally needed to get an engine running again? The internals of the engine is not something I could do myself, it would have to be taken to my indy.

Also, if this car is rusted, where on the body would I check?

Lastly, A couple of posts mentioned a #10 head, I'm lost I guess. Is that the head that this engine has?

Hatterasguy - Do to the milage, are you assuming that the A/C & transmission need to be replaced?

Big J,

A broken rod can be big trouble. Usually it goes thru the side of the block and you need to replace the engine. If its just a rod bearing the crank would most likely have to be replaced or reground. Either way the engine would have to come out to be fixed or replaced.

Are you near the car? I would appreciate if you could look at the car, especially for rust. I have another engine so I don't to much care about that but I would like to know if the oil pan is broken.

Look for rust underneath the fenders and around the jack points and maybe around the floor in the trunk.

nailing can sound like a rod problem to an amatureish gasser only experienced mechanic.

No I am saying that I would buy it for a parts car. A rebuilt compressor runs $900 and a trans is $1,500. So if they work in that car they are worth something to me. Not to mention all of the various "stuff" I could get off it.

If you are going to pay someone else to fix it I would pay him to swap motors. Figure a good used 603 will run you about $1,500 and a rebuilt one is about $6,500.

The longblock for sale is for a wagon so it will have the spot for the self-leveling pump. Another of my "some-day when I have the money" projects include using a TD head and installing SLS in my SDL. You would use the TD head and 560 shocks, lines, etc. and you'd have your own self-leveling SDL. I know most of you would hate that feature but that would come in handy for me as I often have 2 adults in the back riding along and a lot of weight in the trunk on trips.

Will have to wait till after law school...

Thanks
David

I'd love the SLS, the combined weight of my two brothers is around 560lbs! They are huge.
