two temp sending units? 617 turbo
While I was pulling parts off a junker in a boneyard I noticed that it had two temp sensors. (300D) where mine (a bastard) has only one.
On the junker there was one on the back of the thermostat housing and one on the block behind the IP. Mine is using the one behind the block on the IP as the temp sensor. Is this water temp or oil temp being sensed at this port? Also I noticed there are two areas around the thermostat housing where water temp sensors are installed on 617's. One area (like the junker 300D) is behind the thermostat and the other is on the face of the thermostat houseing. (I have a plugged port here but not one behind the thermostate) why is there two in the first place and why the variety of locations for sensors around the thermostat ? In fact is that a third temp sensor next to the one in back of the thermostat that has pressure/vaccum?? lines going to it? Thanks a mucho

Coolant temp sensor is behind the IP, the one on the thermostat housing is the 212F switch for the aux fan. Some are located in the upper hose side, some in the bypass, why I don't know.
If you don't have an electric fan, you won't have the temp switch. Peter

The one with vac lines is probably a vac switch for the EGR.
Fan switch closes at 212F, you only need to add a relay to run the fan, don't try to switch directly, it will fry. Peter

Nothing if the "solenoid switch" is operates a set of contacts to close a high current circuit.
A relay is a solenoid that pulls a contact against a spring to close (or open) a set of contacts. When curent flows through the coil, the contacts are either closed (normally open relay) or opened (normally closed relay). A solenoid can operate other things, though -- such as the pressure control valve in an automatic transmission for electric kickdown, etc. Peter
