I also forgot to mention that I got a driveshaft damper installed as well (bolts to front guibo at transmission). I got lucky and scored a 300D flywheel, driveshaft damper, European headlights and manual IP throttle linkage on a few business trips I had to Europe :D Everything was brought back in my luggage  |
Well I can attest to that fact! I did do a valve adjust while switching the engine, (had to do something to account for the 27 month job, oh, and I fixed all the oil leaks - it is dry and clean) but the engine is so much more responsive and fun to drive. It just seems to love more throttle, more throttle. I remember the last time I drove it about a month ago, man this just does not seem like the same old engine.

1) 87 300TD 2) Conversion 5 speed 3) None 4) Very satisfied I get 33 MPG the engine runs at a lower RPM 5) I think a diesel with 5 speed is the best combo

1978 4spd 240d here, recently acquired.
Very pleased with it for the price, but I wish it had a 5th gear. It's *impossibly loud* at 75mph in 4th. Great car though, my first MB and my first diesel. |
1) Vehicle model and year:
1985 300TD wagon 2) Factory install or owner inflicted retrofit? Retrofit. Salvaged a 4-speed from a 240D with a blown headgasket. 3) Any other modifications (i.e. 4 to 5 cyl, turbo/nonturbo, intercooled etc) made to vehicle? The original point of the project was to replace the motor. The original motor had poor compression (<200 psi) in cylinders 1 & 5. I found a MB factory rebuilt 617.952 with a wagon head for ridiculously cheap. MB Classic Center in Irvine could trace its import & installation into a SD in 1989. Also had to do the usual driveshaft mod when swapping in a 4-speed for an AT. 4) Level of satisfaction with manual transmission performance: So glad I did it. The combination of a newer, rebuilt, low milage 617.952 + 4-speed made it an entirely new car. Great performance, great fuel economy. Fun to drive around town, and pleasant on the highway with the 2.88 diff. 5) Anything else you can think of? The resonance from the lighter 240D flywheel can get a bit annoying, but I've learned to either ignore it or drive around it. It's a good tradeoff for how well the car drives now. I just need to remember to check the exhaust U-bolt on the tranny crossmember... it tends to loosen periodically. |
