Rear axle half shaft

Had anyone try the 1/2 shaft from carquest? Why are they so much cheaper? I can replace the 1/2 shaft about the same price as if I just do the two boots. Seems much easier to install than the split boots. Thanks...

i have 2 1/2 shafts from carquest. they were 'reconditioned', not brand new. they have been working fine since they were installed about 12000mi ago.

I have about 4000 miles on mine. Still working fine. Price was $65 each, with a $129 core charge for each one. They really want those cores back!

I'll answer for The Warden, since it's early in CA and he may not be up yet. He replaced both shafts with rebuilts from Carquest and had to replace one of them 10K miles later.

Replaced mine last fall with carquest , I put split boots on all four joints but I had to cheat because I could not get the exact size split boots so I Improvised a little by puting a larger only size I could get on . Any how I should have called around more because I found that carquest had the real thing cheap but I already put the boots on . After about 2 months the pass side started to make noise so I went to carquest to buy the pass side for around a 100 bucks. Next time I wont bother with the boots for that price, And it was a real easy install on my 83 240d less than 45 min to do the pass side .

I've got no direct experience with Carquest axles on W123's...

I've noticed George whom runs a shop in Ca cameout against them recently in mercedesdigest. He had 6 axles returned in a short time(failure or leaking grease). Some replacements were leaking grease out of the box.

How may miles do you guys have on them???

I've NEVER seen a W123 rebuilt axle seem to last except LOBRO/GKN's which are the OEM supplier. My experience is limited to 3 different suppliers.

I purchased two of the Carquest reconditioned half shafts for my '84 300DT last summer. About three months (4000 miles) later, one side developed a leak. Nothing major but still unpleasant.
I think I will purchase them elsewhere when I get around to replacing them again.
