lost my keys
 

I think I lost my keys today. Normally this would not be a major problem but i had to have a new ignition put in the car after the old one locked up. I know the vin # for my car obviouisly but how could i go about getting a key made for an ignition that came from another mb? thanks

You will have to contactthe dealer that sold you the new ignition and have a new key ordeed to that ignition. Worse case just buy a new ignition and key that matches your VIN.

The guy that put the new ignition in was in an independent so i doubt he has the vin number for it. You would think mb would put the vin number on the ignition somewhere so that problems like this wouldnt happpen.

I got em back thank god. Some one found them and turned em in now i need to get dupes made.

I found it impossible to get duplicate keys made for any of my MB's another trip to the dealer.......

I didn't have any problem getting dupes made.

I think it just depends on whether the shop stocks the MB blanks. Try a larger shop. I got mine in a local hardware store. Hey, call ahead and see if they have them.

I didn't get the steel blanks, however. I think only MB stocks them. I've heard that the brass blanks are harder on the ignition - perhaps the brass particles that wear off foul the lock.

It may be better to go to the trouble and expense to get steel keys from the MB dealer. (I've heard they'll require your registration/proof of ownership.)

Get the steel keys, they are only (usually) about $20 each.

The indy probably replaced the ignition with an original key one -- same way you get a new key from the dealer. Unless it was fairly old and the tumbler set had to be ordered from Germany, it should have come with a spare key.

The brass keys wear too fast -- the steel ones last about 30 years. A brass key made from a worn steel key will probably only work for a few years, not worth the hassle. They also crud up the tumblers, leading to another replacement.

I've also been told to keep the weight on the key ring down -- that means a separate ring for the car keys, don't hang it on a big bundle of house and shop and work keys. Bad for the tumbler set.
