New TD owner questions

Okay, I just bought my TD a month ago and since then I have driven it over 1500 mi. and so far its running like a champ. I'm getting 23 mi. to the gallon at best and there are a few glitches I've found. One is the heater does not blow hot air. Second, the cruise control does not work and lastly the Becker radio is not fully functioning, how do I pull it out? Can anyone help me with any of the above. Oh one more, I would like to buy a repair manuel of some sort but all I've seen are super expensive CD's, are there any other avenues to aquire one.

Welcome aboard and here we go.

Do a search on the heater not blowing hot air. You are entering the "twilight zone" of early 80's MB automatic climate control - LOL. Once you learn/study the vacuum system and the pushbutton contol system that goes with it it becomes pretty stright forward. The automatic climate control system is kinda a pia initially. This site http://gdl-online.com/begin.html can fix cruise controls amplifiers and actuators. The absolute BEST manuals are the paper manuals that you can pick up off ebay every now and then. Do a search on all of your question topics and you should find all kinds of answers.

Well, first, just deal with the lack of cruise control, unless you want to put a lot of time/money getting it to work.

To get the becker out, i believe you have to remove the faceplate and then release two tabs on the bottom of the radio slot. That is how it was on my Europa.

Now... with the manuals, you are in luck...I have a friend who is a MB Dealer Tech, who gave he his whole Dealer Tech CD Set with all the manuals, and I have successfully burned them, so if you send me 2 CDRs and enough $$ to cover postage, I might be able to help you out.

E-mail me if interested

We also need to know about your car! Please post the year and model, as the different body styles have different foibles, and sometimes different engines. If you click on your "user cp" button you can think click on user profile and add this info to your signature so you won't forget.

I love wagons. Congratulations!

If that's all that's wrong with the car, you're doing well! These guys have been very helpful with our (numerous!) repairs to our 81 300TD. We are getting better mileage than that, usually between 28-30mpg, though the last tank was only 26 (I'm attributing it to the use of the AC). The 30 was on one hwy trip, around town it's usually 28.

Good luck!

What a testimonial! The car is 21 years old and the major problems are the heater and the radio. Well, as the saying goes, save the radio- it is now a valuable fossil relic and eventually someone seeking to recreate the bygone days will be begging for one. Tune it just right and you might pick up a 'lost-in-space' broadcast by the Cars......

the guy at www.**************.com is very helpful and has access to anything you need. He has also written a book for those years and it has been the most useful piece of information along with this board that i could have dreamed of. Check it out I think it is called performance tuning and maintenance.

About your heater, it probably is your thermostat.

Thanks, John
