EGR - Expensive part - how important?

My mechanic found my EGR was not operating properly (or not at all). It's not a cheap part ($250), but looks to be a very easy wrench job.

Can someone give me the basic run down of what the repercussions would be for not replacing the EGR? (Performance / Combustion Temp / bad environmental citizen?)

Many, many people simply disconnect them by blocking the vacuum line - others by blocking off the EGR port and removing the entire component train.

Depends on whether or not this item is checked by your state's emission testing or safety check system (if your state has one).

Me? I would not spend more than about $1 for the metal plate material needed to block it off permanently.

I think I speak for the majority of us: dont worry about it! Just seal it up like the rest of us, and enjoy the added power.

I am sorry to admit it but just seal it up EGR valve suck.

Now I know why they call me enviromental Bob.

DO a search on the topic you will get alot of good reasons to seal it off.

We dont have computers to mess with so there is no harm to the engine performance.

good luck

bob

go out and spend that 250 bucks on some imported german beer.

Anyone fabbed a plate?

Boy with some research this is an interesting topic.

Looks like a few people have gone through some nice fabrication to make some "testing" parts for the EGR:

Anyone making a "testing" plate for the 5 cylinder 617 engine (81-85 turbo)... email me off line!

To disable the EGR do you have to block the line or could you simply "accidentally," misplace the line?
Thanks
David

Be sure to block the vacuum line. You do want to disable the EGR but you don't want a vacuum leak!

Has anyone removed the vaccum hose to the EGR on their '95+ E300's? I'm curious if it sets off a check engine light.

hey bodyart27,
I did the same thing with an old cookie baking sheet and a pair of tin snips a few months ago. Worked just fine! Though yours is a whole lot neater looking.

I'm 99% sure the vacuum parts that control the EGR valve on my 240 are not working, my question is, Is it possible for the EGR to be stuck open? Also if the EGR is blocked off or not functioning, should the throttle butterfly be removed? I tried propping it all the way open and driving around, the car seemed much happier so i removed the plate.

If diesels do not need an exact fuel/air ratio, whay do 240's have those? These are the only diesels I have ever seen with such a setup.
