Post '87 300D Question

I found a nice looking 1987 300D Turbo with 170,000 miles on it. It has an extensive list of repairs and records and the asking price is $4000. I am curious if this seems like a fair deal and whether or not the OM603 will prove reliable for at least another 60,000 miles. Also, can the car be switched directly over to synthetic oil?

Thanks for any feedback.

Check turbodiesel's thread "My 300SDL on eBay" if you're worried about the engine.... his has 321,000+ on it so another 60k on that one should be nothing if it has been cared for. That's what you have to figure out though....if it's been properly maintained, if it hasn't it could turn into a money pit trying to get it into shape again. $4000 seems reasonable to me if it's in good shape. Shouldn't have any problem switching to a synthetic oil as long as it doesn't have any leaks already.

Mine has 210,000 on the clock and other than some annoying minor problems is running strong. I'm looking for another 200,000 miles or more.

Regards,

Joe

Thumbs up

Thanks for the feedback guys. I am really excited about the 300D and I think I'll put my deposit on it today. Other than the aluminum head, I think I am fairly confident in the OM603. I also found out that the current owner recently replaced the AC system and the expansion valve.

Sounds like a good deal with the new ac....... might want to take it for a good drive to make sure it doesn't get too hot. Also check to make sure cooling system isn't under pressure when cold... before you start it (indicates head or head gasket problem).... also look for oil in coolant or coolant in oil. I can't think of anything else to check right now.
