Spinning on belts for w123 are easy.

Hey folks,

I just finished spinning on new ac and power steering belts and it was very easy. If you need to change yours out dont botther messing with the tensioners just spin new ones on by getting a big ratchet on the crank shaft and whola it is done. I thought that it would be hard. You dont even need to use a screwdriver or anything.

Just a quick message to aid my fellow mercedes maniacs

Spinning on belts is NOT the way to do the task.

You have damaged the belts by breaking the cords internal to the belts. I've seen lots of shady mechs do it and the cars come back.

Afraid I have to agree. Although my belts may well be too tight, when I spun one on it basically started falling apart after only about 20K miles. The rest are fine. Spun on the A/C belt cause I couldn't figure out any other way (I Know how now).

Hello All

well you learn something new every day.

I tried to move them by loosening up the bolts and adjustment slides but they would not budge.

Any way I will try harder next time.

thanks

Yes, you need to try harder. I also would recommend that you buy a new set of belts and keep them in the trunk. You will need one of them before too long.

Good luck,

Not much more I can add. The case is closed.

Hey Larry,

I'm surprised. I didn't know you had all those quals. Hey, I've been fixen on these MBs for 30 years and no one ever gave me no STINKEN BADGES. All I ever got at the dealership where I apprenticed was some wall plaques.

See ya,
Peter

Absolutely carry spare belts for your MB... and also throw in a main fuel filter and two pre-filters (along with a couple hose clamps, too). Murphy keeps track of where you are and how difficult parts are to get in various parts of the country.

The amount of spares I carry for my A-H could almost be entered in a concourse judging as a "work in progress" but then thats a whole different story....

Cheers,
Wes

what about adjustable belts for emergencies, anyone know how well they work? Well enough to get you home? Not even worth it?
