1984 300D Turbo Diesel - Tranny Problem

What happened? While the shift lever on “D” and after about 3 kilometers of driving, I slowed down to a stop on a traffic light controlled intersection and waited for clear traffic to make a left turn. When able and after about 20-30 seconds of idling, I stepped on the accelerator pedal and the engine rev up rapidly to about 3,500-4,000 rpm with the car barely gaining speed. When I released and pressed the accelerator pedal again (a slow pumping action), I felt an “engaging-mild-thump” sound in the transmission and the car gained speed and shifted up to top gear okay. Again, while the shift lever on “D”, I cloned the driving pattern a few more times with the same result. With the shift lever on “S”, the same result. The transmission appears to be slipping-out-of-gear when the car slows down to a full stop to idle speed. The transmission was completely rebuilt at 177,000 km. and currently have 186,000 km. (9,000 km. on the rebuilt tranny). Workaround to get the car home: From Stop, I press on the accelerator to get the car moving, pump the accelerator until I hear a gear engaging then it drives okay. ANY THOUGHTS on WHAT WENT WRONG? THX.

How does it do when you manually shift it?

Did they have any parts left over after the rebuild? Sounds like you have a tranny "issue". I would take it back to the people that rebuilt it. Was there a warrenty? My first thought is that vacuum and Bowden cable control adjustment ain't gonna fix this one.

When at speed, everything including manual shifting works fine. Accelerating from a full stop, the tranny appears to start on 3rd or 4th gear (as the car moves very slowly. Releasing and stepping again causes the tranny to downshift to 2nd) and the car take=off fine from there.

I just got the car back from the shop. The servo piston was fractured and replaced (it's a good thing it was not the band!). The car is back to normal. Thk you for your input.
