Free Wheeling 300sd Climate Control (temp) wheel

A family member spun the temperature control wheel (Hot, Ambient, Cold) past either the max hot or min cold setting. The wheel spins, but no longer dials in temperture settings. How is this wheel fixed to its shaft (pinned?), and can a reasonably mechanically adept owner make a repair? Inquiring to determine whether the unit is dead for certain and a reworked unit is the only way to go. Hoping for idea of prospects for repair before I open the dash area.

Also, how to get the CC unit out of dash? From other threads, it appears the cig lighter tray comes out and there are two screws fixing the lower end of the wood CC trim panel. Any other hints to get access to CC unit?
TIA.
