The Bob:

There are two ways to remove a tranny.

1. Get all the information you can from manuals, members and CD's and think about it for a week.

2. Start unscrewing.

We have a local guy who has been working on these things forever and he blew off the process by telling us to go with the number 2 above.

We've done three of them now. Easy.

1. Drive shaft (the flex discs are a bit tricky as once they are unscrewed, you need to pry out the sleeves that are embedded in the rubber)

2. Tranny support (cross member)

3. Tranny to engine bolts. I got at all these on a five banger and a four banger, but a few were a royal pain. Took some creative tools

I was just told by my Benz guru that an additive during the trans service might do the trick and not hurt the tranny.

I'll keep you advised.

Well, did the trans service today, added the additive, will advise.

Also, the differential mount bushings were bad, What A PITA! I, in the dumbest move of the day, saw a leak in the muffler and decided to replace. Had the new $170.00 part delivered and it looked identical. I took a hammer and easily knocked a big hole in the back of the muffler, wisely telling my buddy that this would have failed soon and I was so smart for catching the problem early.

After messing with bushings most of the day, we got to the muffler and, of course, the new one didn't fit!!! I just spent several hours attempting to weld, putting out fires, patching and more patching and finally put the old one back on.

The self inflicted hole couldn't have been any worse!

I'll advise if the seal stuff works.

You got some courage adding that stuff. I am a bit scared to add it to mine. I heard the opposing opinions from well respected mercedes gurus.

Maybe I would, if I do, add the sealant for about a week or maybe 1000 miles then drain it with filter. then see what happens. Anyway that might be the normal instructions anyhow.

We shall see.

My guy added the sealant additive and after a few days, it is dry as a bone.

Shifts perfectly and we replaced the muffler ($$ eek) and it no longer sounds like a dirt bike is tailgating me.

My benz guy with 30+ years under his belt had no problem with the additive.
