up-grade light output on U.S. spec headlights?

I've decided to put off buying Euro-lights for a while since I have a few other things to spend $500.00 on..... I'm wondering if anyone can get me up to speed on what bulbs are available, bulbs that might be a little brighter. BTW this is for an '87 124 thanks.
