45 state diesels, who are the unlucky 5?

I know about California and Massachussetts, who are the other 3?

Any smart CA resident knows to buy and or register his vehicle out of state (AZ or NV) I suspect those fortunate enough to get the new CDI equipped models will do so and also avoid the now tripled vehicle tax as well(thanks Gray-I pander to all except the tax payer-Davis).

The states in the northeast adoptec Californias emissions regulations. Under those regs, and with our relatively high sulfer content diesel fuel, the CDI cannot meet those emissions regulations. The emissions systems cannot handle the sulphur content of the fuel.

What are we talking about in the "5" states? I live in MA and would like to know what I'm missing, paying for, etc. My diesel was registered and inspected without problems. Sorry for my ignorance, it's just that I'm curious. Thanks for your tolerance, and I look forward to being enlightened.

They are talking about the new CDI diesels MB is bringing here starting model year 2004. They will not be available to dealers in those 5 states. The new E320 CDI will get something like 38 mpg and accelerate almost as fast as a gasoline E320.

The new MB CDI line of diesels. Any older MB diesel is fine.

Antony, your car was sold before CA and eventually the Northeast adopted the overly strict diesel emissions regulations. The new CDI diesels will not be able to be sold new in those states untill the US starts processing fuel to the EU standards in about 2006. They will be able to be brought in as used cars, as these states cannot prevent people from moving into their states and keeping their already owned vehicles.

Once the US starts producing diesel fuel to EU sulphur specs, the CDI's should migrate into the 5 currently omitted states.

Yeah and are they ever going to bring all of the other diesels over? Like in the other classes, and engine sizes?

The one I would most be likely to buy (And I'm sure would kill all these hondas, toyotas and kia's) is the A class. I just hope they would fix the understeer.

The engine I'm most interested in is the 400 CDI. Either S or E would rock.
