what is the first step i should take to fix a bad rod in a 300sd. i also got a 88' 420 and it blows out a little smoke.???

The 420 could use a set of valve guide seals. It might cure the problem for a while. If the problem comes back, you may have to do a valve job.

The auction i bought it from had it returned because it had a bad rod. the sd is a 1986 with 196,000 miles. i have not started it yet for fear of further damage and someone warned me
