Do oil cooler lines have a gasket?

Here's the stupid question for the day. Do oil cooler lines have a gasket, or are they some type of tricky metal-to-metal setup?

Both my 300SD's leak from the area of oil cooler line to oil cooler lock nuts. Is this where they usually fail? Is there a gasket replacement, or is the whole darn line that has to be replaced.

By the way, I just ran across a 83 300SD down at Frank's Foreign Cars in Laguna Beach that has 376,000 miles on it. The interior looked great but the paint was history.

No gasket. It is a flare fitting. If you torque the fitting to the correct amount the flare of the line and flare of the fitting seals the line.

CAREFULLLLLLLLl

Torque them PROPERLY with a wrench on the nut that is part of the oil cooler to hold it. The cooler damages very easy!!!. Its very possible that the oil cooler is cracking around that area. Not unusual either. Been There Bent That !!!!

I had a brand new oil cooler line on my 84 300SD leak where your's leaked. I wrapped the flare on the hose about six times with teflon tape. There is no more leak.

I'm going to try the teflon tape thing. Anybody know what the torque specs are on the cooler line?

I pulled out the monster Crescent wrench over the weekend, but I wisely did not crank down on the nut. I merely tested it to see how tight it was. The teflon tape seems to be a good idea.
