Importance of AirBags in Mercedes for safety?

HI...
I'm looking to get an 83 300D...(My mechanic actually told me 82-84s were preferable mechanically to the 85s).
I wanted to get a bullet-proof, strong car that I feel safe in....Now I'm starting to think I should get a later model with Airbags (Although I can't afford it and I love the style of the early models)...What do you all think?
Thanks much...
Linda

I would never equate safety with 'airbag'. Would you rather be in a 1981 Mercedes without an airbag or a Geo Metro with one? I

I have read that when it comes to safety, an extra 250lbs of car is equal to an airbag.
