1992 300D 2.5 298,000 fuel leak
 

I just got the car (2.5). I finished a 560sel and had fun with it.

The person who owned the 300D before said: The dealer told them that they had a fuel leak. He connected the heater hoses to stop the flow to the heater core. He said that the car could catch on fire.

I have never heard of anything like that. Does anyone have any idea why he would do that?

What are the problem areas to look at.

What should I look for in the font end or the rear end.

What do heater hoses have to do with a fuel leak? Is there a fuel heater in the 2.5? Even so, you can drop a match into a bowl of Diesel fuel and it won't burn, explode or do anything but put out the flame. I suppose under 200psi of atmostpheric pressure it would be a concern :)

Do you see a fuel leak? Your nose should find it quite easily.

Could it possibly be a heater core leak? No fire hazard but it's not good to inhale coolant for extended periods.

Check whether your car is subject to the timing chain recall and if it was done. There's also some discussion about resonance valves on these cars.

No I do not see or smell a fuel leak. I will follow the heater hoses and find why they did what they did.
