Just the muffler or pipes also?
1982 300D Turbo 200K+
Wondering if I need to replace the whole system or just the muffler itself. Also, is this something I can do myself without welding capability or will I need to go to the shop? |

I have a 84 300DT and replaced all three pieces last year. It was an easy project. Although I replaced the header pipe. it really wasn't in bad repair, I don't think that I would replace it the next time. The other two pieces with the mufflers needed replacing. Like I said, easy project.

Mr Goodfahrt,
It depends on how good or bad the pipes are. If they seem solid and only the muffler is bad, just replace the muffler. If you can see any pinholes in the pipes they won't last long and you might as well replace them now. P E H |

Not really off-topic, but sort of tangential…
BobKern: I’m curious as to how much of a difference the replacement made as far a cabin noise intrusion is concerned? And how bad was your system when you replaced it? A few small holes, or Swiss cheese?

For under $300 you can replace the whole exhaust system with a Bosel exhaust from Autozone and it comes with a lifetime free replacement if it should fail. takes less then 1/2 hr to change easy.
