K & N Air Filter

About C$100 (about US$68 (Sep 2003)), plus the cleaner and oil sprays but never have to buy another air filter again, I was told. Is it worth it? More power?

Search the Diesel forum for information about K&N filters...lots was written in recent history about this very thing.

Be advised that the stock filter assy on MBZ diesels includes an oil separator that will need to be replicated and plumbed into the new arrangement or you will, at best, have an oily mess under the hood. At worst, you'll be running your engine out of lubricant.

There are many opinions on K&N air filters. You can read lots of discussion on this subject on the oildrop.server website. I personally don't care for K&N.

Have only heard bad things about it like premature engine wear due to excessive dirt intake so would avoid it personaly.

The ONLY reason I would use a K&N is if you were to do an intake mod like I did. Othewise the stock oil seperator in the filter housing will just ruin it. Also, if you DO decide to mod the intake like me, atleast try to look for a suitable paper filter first or get the K&N precharger to cover the filter.

Is there no oiled-foam filter that will fit these cars? I've never looked for one but it seems that would be the perfect option.

The oil from these filters would wreak havoc with the mass air flow sensors. For this reason, oiled filters will void engine warranty with some manufacturers.

True, but I was assuming we were talking about an older car where that wasn't a problem.

Use paper filters. By the time you get enough oil on the foam filters to remove as much dirt as the paper does, it bleeds through and carrys the dirt with it. Engine dies from grit inhalation. Oiled foam filters are NOT the equivalvent of an oilbath filter!

There is very little difference in flow, Benz uses large filters and the OEM ones don't have that much flow resistance. Cheapo aftermarkets may be different.
