84 300D Shifter Problem

When I shift from P to R, the transmission always engages immediately. However, when shifting from P or R to D, it wants to remain in N. If I go to 2, it engages immediately, so I just go to 2, and after the car starts forward I ease the lever up to D. It feels like there may be some slop in the shift linkage. Has anyone else had this symptom? Is there a part that can be replaced that will "tighten-up" the linkage or is there an adjustment.

Thanks,
