Soooo much better now!!
The old US spec headlights that were installed on my Euro as part of its federalization process have now been evicted. Now, what MB designed the W123 to actually look like. Oh yeah, the lighting is much better as well.

That's funny, I really like the round ones, like in the before pict. That's a big reason why I like the 300D. To each his own ...

I'm the same, I MUCH prefer the before picture version lights. It's one of my favorite parts of my TD.

Some folks claim that the square "Euro" headlights on an MBZ make it look like a Volvo....IMHO, I dig the Euro lights and personally think that Volvo was most likely copying MBZ when they decided to use rectangular headamps.

If it were a US spec car, then I would have left them alone. The US lights though, just seemed out of place on the Euro car. It now looks like it did when it was sitting on the German car lot back when it was new, minus of course the faded paint. The latter will be taken care of in due course though.

R Leo, if you don't have euros on yours, you should see the lighting pattern that these things put out. They put the old roundies to shame. If you have 'em, then you already know what I'm talking about.

Anyone know where to get just the glass? My lenses are chipped and one is cracked.... I would like to replace without spending a small fortune?

If you want to keep the original US model look but increase your lighting output, look into a pair of Cibie 7" H4 lights. They're a direct replacement for the sealed beam.

Or, you can do what I did to one of my 300Ds.
We don't get much fog here, but we have a ton of elk here in the White Mountains that like to cross highways, preferably in front of fast moving vehicles. I replaced my fog lights with Halogen high beam units, aimed them up and slightly out and moved the fog lamp wire to the high beam circuit. Now I can turn them on (they dim with the high beams if a car approaches) and I can see those suckers BEFORE they get to the road in front of me. So far, I like them that way. Cheers, Wes |

The euro lights get my vote! My vote is kind of biased since I have them as well on my car. Yes the lighting pattern is much better than the US spec lights. I never liked the looks of the round lights when the car was first introduced in the states in 1977. I was actually disappointed with the W123 model when it replaced the previous line. I though it was ugly then, but it has grown on me. IMHO the US lights look like an after-thought, sort of a rushed idea to make the US DOT happy. That was the first thing I changed to when I bought my car.

Euro vs Federal lights
Actually. The only US aspect of the "US" spec light design is the yellowish color of the inner lights. Outside the US the "downmarket" versions of the 123, ie the 200, 200D, 230, 230E, 240D, 300D all had the same round headlights. Only the top of the line cars recieved the "euro" lights. ie the 280, 280E, and possibly the 250 while it was produced, though I cant remember as I've seen so few of them.
For myself I actually prefer the round lights. I think they look better in the 123 body, while the "euro" lights look better in the 116. But then, aesthetics is largely subjective. They look great whichever you choose. - Peter.
