Are all diesel Benzes fuel systems similar?
I am trying to find which Dielsel powered Mercedes have similar fuel sustems...eg the fuel pump, filter, IP, return line configurations.
Mercedes diesels have become one of the more popular vehicles to convert to vegetable oil fuel..which is not surprising to me. I am in the process of converting a 1987 190D 2.5 turbo myself. I already have nearly 30,000 miles on a converted 88 Ford F250 using used fryer oil and am convinced it is a viable alternative fuel if properly prefiltered and the vehicle properly converted. Since the fuel system configuration is key in any vegoil conversion I am trying to set up separate discussion strings on the Infopop svo (strait vegetable oil) discussion board for the different diesel vehicles available (in the USA). Hopefully this will make researching which the archives for conversion advice/pitfalls easier for the growing number of folks considering taking the risk of converting to vegoil. So...can anyone help me out here? From the limited experience I have with Mercedes vehicles (3 conversions) it appears to me that the fuel delivery system configurations are very similar. Can anyone verify this ...or set me strait? Were there any significant changes around a certain year? I know some may consider converting these fine autos to waste fryer oil near blasphemy. But it is really a tribute to the great engineering of these "true world cars" that they are not only so tolerant of this fuel...but that so many arestill running strong so many years (and miles) after they were built and so available for conversion at a reasonable cost. Thanks in advance..and if anyone want more info on vegoil conversions just contact me and I will be happy to share my links to good info. Dana danalinscott@yahoo.com

Danalin,
All the MB fuel systems I have seen from a 180D and up are similar up until the time of the CDI (electronic) Diesels. The '87 and later Diesel engines had a fuel heater built into the cylinder head that could be used to heat Veggy oil once the engine gets hot with some modification to the fuel thermostat. I would appreciate any Veggie oil information. Just e-mail it to me. P E H |

1999 is the last year of the indirect injection diesels in the U.S., and its fuel system is similar, but somewhat more complicated than the earlier ones. There are at least 5 lines going to the fuel filter, and some of them are buried under the intake manifold, so their function is not obvious. No doubt a conversion could be done, but somebody has to trace all those lines and figure out what they do. Here's a shot of what I'm talking about:

The stock fuel heater on my 87 SDL did little to change the veggie oil temp. So, the fuel thermostat has been religated to a box on my garage shelf. I am not too worried about gelling issues here in Oklahoma and I needed the extra space for my 6 port valve.
