I don't think you have a cat unless it's a CA model. You have two mufflers though, can't say if it would help to remove them. Most people just say it will be louder, I don't know how many of them have actually removed the mufflers and checked mileage and noise.

I talked my girlfriend into letting me remove the rear muffler from her 83 300D turbo. It made it a little bit louder(mostly at idle) but nothing extreme (i actually like it!!). It affected the fuel mileage much more than I imagined it would, it increased it by 3mpg. I then put a straight pipe on it and a small chrome tip out to where the stock pipe was by the bumper. Turned out looking great, sounding great, and increasing fuel mileage and I would do it again if it was me.

I run a straight pipe on my TD. Since my odometer does not work I have no way to judge milage. Some might say it is too loud, I LOVE IT! Now, I have it disconnected at the downturn after the turbo but I am planning to have a custom exhaust made to bring it to the stock location and get the exhaust from out of my passenger window. Most quotes I have got are between $90 and $135 without muffler.

These cars don't have catalysts, regardless of whether they're CA version or not. Theoretically, you might gain a few mpg by removing the muffler as that would make the exhaust more free-flowing, but I wouldn't consider 3 mpg worth the effort and increased noise. My car's fuel economy frequently varies 3 mpg from one fuel tank to another and unless you're consistently getting 3 mpg more than before, I wouldn't draw any conclusions.

OK, I thought the 2 things on either side of the driveshaft in front of the axle were Converters. There is another muffler behind the axle exiting in 2 chrome tips.

If you look at the stickers in the driver's door you should see "Non Catalyst". Also it's a well known fact that diesel cars don't produce hot enough exhaust gases to make a catalyst work. This might not be the case with the very latest models, but it holds true for the older ones.

An '84 or earlier 300SD would NOT ever have been equipped with a catalytic convertor.
Removal of the CAT on later MB diesels (up to '95) has been ALMOST undetectable with regard to power or economy unless the CAT was occluded. Marshall |
