rebuilding vacuum pump

Can the vacuum pump on a 1986 2.5 diesel be rebuilt? I did a search and couldn't find it. My 190D won't build up a good vacuum until I rev it up some. I figure something is leaking. Thanks, Ernie

Ernie,

I've not heard of these pumps getting rebuilt. The original pumps had open bearing design and if the bearing falls, it can drop the balls into the front cover possibly causing the engine to jump time & turning it into a very large doorstop. Most have failed between 150-200Kmi. The one on my '87 300D was still working at 250Kmi when I replaced it as preventiive maintenance. Cost ~ $200. Hook a vacuum guage up to the pump and see what the reading is, I forget the exact vac its supposed to pull at idle, but I'm sure someone knows...
