Rear seat for wagons - w123 Vs. w124
1 Attachment(s)
Okay, I was looking closely at a w124 wagon rear seats and they look almost identical to my w123 seats. really. almost identical! now. since the w124 has firmer seats- at least in the rear, i want to swap if possible.
does ANYONE know whether or not that will work? ive heard that the w123 is wider and that could possibley mean that the seats are wider as well. cheers! eric |
Eric,
I don't think it will work. I believe the attachment points are different. Also, the shape of the floor under the seats themselves is different, so the cushions won't sit right. Since you have a W123, you know that there is a locking bar that goes across the width of the seat. This is missing on the W124. |
Interesting idea! If it works out, I'll have to look into it myself.
Just the other day I pulled out the rear seat bottoms to reattach the upholstery (it was beginning to come off the frame pretty badly). Lo and behold, what do I find caught in the springs but a fork I must have lost in there in grade school (never let kids eat in the car! ). Combine that with a marble from the same era I recently found after removing the front passenger seat completely (wedged under the bolt clips) and this is beginning to look like an archaeological dig... |
Is there a trick to removing the back seats in a w123?
|
pretty easy iirc
After you flip it up there's some sort of clip or something where it attaches to the front hinge. Unclip and it pops right out.

This only works in wagons...
As flyloki said, flip the seat bottoms up as if you're getting ready to flatten the rear seats, and you will see two orange nubs on both sides of each of the seat bottoms. Pull them upward to release the seat bottoms from their hinges. |
I just checked my W124 TD and W123 TD and it won't work. The way the rear seat, bottom cushions attach to the hinges is different between the 2 models.

wow thanks rick.
just curious - which seats do you prefer? eric |
That's hard to say being that I don't ride back there. The seats in the 124 are not as tall as the 123's. There is less spring travel. The springs in my 123's rear seats are fairly firm, whereas the 124's, I would call stiff. It seem they used more foam in the 124's and the 123 has the horsehair pad and metal springs.
