D'oh! Anybody have a spare? This would be for the 240D.

Actually I just got in from the shop where I installed one of those adjusters. I had never had one, always used a bar in back of the alt. on the wifes car. They do make life eaiser but not a major cats ass trafee

I think you're better off without it. It takes too long to loosen up the alternator to change the belt with that bolt there. Just leave it off and pry the alternator out and tighten it to get the right tension just like most other sensibly designed alternators work.

Randy - actually, I don't know. The last time I tightened this thing, I really cranked down on it. But it came loose again today, and I had to get a jump to get home from work. So I loosened the large bolt, turned the adjuster about three turns, and snap!
Since this thing has a history of coming loose even with the adjuster in place, I'd like to replace it with the right thing. $14 at Fastlane. That's a darn expensive bolt. Looks like I'll be taking a trip to the junkyard on Saturday to pick one up for $.50.

Stevo;
Yes. When I was touring France in my 307d this summer, the alternator belt started to slip. I tried to tighten it up and discovered that the bolt had somehow become slightly bent and would not tighten. I didn't have enough tools with me so had to take it to a shop where they removed the alternator and bracket and straightened out the bolt. So, what would have been a five minute job without the bolt turned into a three hour wait at a garage. Needless to say, this colors my opinion about the uselessness of this pain-in-the-ass bolt.

if your going to the junk yard , look for the early model, it does not have the long adjuster bolt that broke on yours, hard to explain but you will see the differance if you can find one. it adjusts the tension by rotating the head, of one of the large mounting bolts, it has a small flat gear on it.......my 79 240d had this style and looks more robust, be sure the get the whole assembly ......

This may be obvious and you already know this but I'll go on anyway for the forum: It looks to me like you didn't loosen that nut completely before trying to tension the belt. The threaded adjuster bolt is attached to the moveable pinch bolt which holds the alternator belt tension once the proper tension has been established. If the pinch bolt binds for any reason (not completely loose et al), continuing to tighten the adjuster could certainly cause the adjuster bolt to break. Additionally, if the pinch bolt was binding before the proper belt tension was achieved, you'd be experiencing a slipping belt scenario as well.

Kerry "touring France"
I am envious of your trip around the Med and especially scoring of the 307d... Good for you for planning it out and just DOING IT. I can see why youd be a little down on the alt adjusters Steve Last edited by Stevo; 10-24-2003 at 02:42 PM. |
