1985 300TD Yellow Wagen For Sale in South Carolina

Sorry, I don't have pics but I ran into a man today at the MB mechanic and he is wanting to sell his 1985 300 TD Wagen .

He says that the rings are shot (388,000 miles). He has been keeping it plugged up overnight(50 degree temps) so it will start in the mornings. He has two other MB's and is ready to part with the '85.

The car is VERY nice to look at. Extremely straight! The interior is very nice with the exception of the driver's seat.

The car has a fresh automatic trans ( rebuilt less than 40,000 miles ago). The A/C still works.

If someone needs parts or would like to have a nice Wagen body and trans then I can get the man's contact info for them.

He is asking $800. The car is VERY straight! It DOES RUN! I heard it run. It was a hard start but it does run. Decent tires and wheels.

With a little patience a person could get it to it's new home without the aide of a tow truck or car hauler.

If you are interested then let me know. I am just trying to help the man out. No monetary gain for me. I wish I had $800. I'd buy it and get started on a rebuild.

What about rust? What colour is the interior?

We're down a car now. :p

I may need a tranny. Wonder what kind of rebuild it was. Any info on that?

If it has a third seat, would he be interested in a trade for a 123 sedan in good mechanical order with no engine?

Rust, third seat, tranny rebuild

Okay,

I did not do a "full body search" but I saw NO RUST on some of the usual places, i.e. jack points, fenders, rocker panels. I did not inspect the floors but after seeing the shape that the rest of the car was in I would feel pretty confident that the floors are solid. I can go check but the car is an hour and fifiteen minutes away from me.

The owner said that the tranny was COMPLETELY gone through less than 40,000 miles ago. I can only tell you what I was told about that.

Yes, third seat!
Tan interior!

I only met this man yesterday (October 23, 2003) so I don't know enough about him to say whether he is honest or not. I know what impression I got and from that I would buy the car if I had an extra $800. Then again, I have been taken before.

It would have been nice to have found this wagen last year before I purchased the "endless money vacuum '82 240D Auto". The 240D has just about turned me TOTALLY against MB. VW's seem to get some mixed reviews here on the forum but my VW diesels rarely, and I mean rarely, ever have to be worked on.
I am just venting. I will be apologizing for what I just typed in an hour or so when I am cruising down the four-lane in the ol' 240D. Rides great! Drives great! That is if it ever stays fixed long enough to ride and drive.

You could probably buy it and drive it as-is for another 50-100k miles provided you keep the oil full.

Now there's a thought. A disposable Benz!

If I bought it I would swap the tranny with the one in my '83 that is tired, then try to sell it again with full disclosure or maybe part it out.

I wonder how many wagon guys need somethning from it? Just a thought.

But that yellow does sound awfully pretty!

Conversely, I am a TOTAL NEWBIE!!! I wonder what the cost/effort would be to have the engine rebuild? What would you end up with? A money pit?
