steering column bushings?
At the mbz.org site it says that replacing the bushings in the steering column can really improve any play. Anyone done this or have more information?

It's on the list for all three old benzs here.
The bushings are in the coupler between the steering gear box and the steering column proper, down at the box. Two ways to check -- if the steering wheel rattles on gravel or rough pavement, the bushings are gone and you are hearing the steel pins hit the steel coupler. Or you can watch the coupler while someone wriggles the steering wheel back and forth. The relative movement of the two parts fo the coupler will be obvious. Two clamp screws (have to come completely out), and you must then slide either the column or the gearbox away to get it off. Mark the position vs the gearbox, it's splined and there isn't a blind one. Steering wheel won't be straight if you miss. Steering column side is a square fitting. Transfer mark to new coupler before re-installing. On the later (W114/5 and on) models, you must buy and new coupler, they cannot be repaired. On ealier ones, the bushing pins are held on by clips and the bushings can be replaced. Peter

Seems to me that what you're talking about is #3. I'm wondering what #4 refers to? |
