hey there! after replacing the oil and filters in my 85 TD-T the transmission started to really jolt as it went through the gears, the car would not shut off and the locks didn't work. well, i found there to be a broken hose piece. must have leaned on it while messing with the oil filter. that has since been replaced and everything appears to be back together. the car shuts off and the locks work properly. the transmission shifts fine if light on the pedal. the problem is when you try to accelerate with a heavy foot. 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th gears really hold on before upshifting at 4000 to 5000 RPM. anyone have any insight?

That's just what it's supposed to do. Be thankful it isn't flaring.

If the bowden cable is adjusted tight it will hold longer. Let some slack in the cable and it could lower it. I do the same with mine if I want it to shift into 4th between 2000 and 2500rpm in normal driving. Test around with the cable setting until eveything feels good (Don't forget about the low end as well as the high end).

Lance, Thanks for mentioning that Bowden cable...if it is binding or if it is not running in a fairlead to the transmission, it will cause delayed shifts also. There's a plastic clip that supposedly holds the cable to the dipstick tube; sometines it breaks or is missing.
The scenario you'll experience with a too-tight or binding Bowden cable that the tranny won't shift to the higher gear until you are at top RPM no matter what you do with the throttle. However, if you are getting good shifts under normal acceleration and delayed shifts (ie 4000RPM or so) under hard acceleration, it sounds like everything is working OK.

thank you Lance and R Leo!
i really appreciate your replies. this really is not something the transmission should not do. i may not have explained the situation fully. this is occuring under normal acceleration (somewhere in the middle of coasting and flooring it) haven't looked into the bowden cable yet but will get right on it once eric and i get a chance to "set up shop". my mechanic will take a look on sat but i am hoping to have this figured out on my own. i'll let you know! justin p.s. hey R Leo...i have two standard poodles! |
