I would have to see it in person, but based on the pictures it's worth much more than $950, more like $2500. It seems in great shape. I'm too spoiled to the turbocharger, but even so, I would think about buying it if I were looking for a second/replacement car.

Grdenko,
I'd look it over carefully for the usual things: rust etc.

If, and only if it was ultra clean and the engine swap didn't appear to be a hatchet-job, I might consider paying as much as $1500. Of course, If you can steal it for anything less, that's cool too.

In your favor, is the fact that few people outside the circle of Benz-heads really understand the desirability of the manual 240D. Since this dope has the car listed as a "200 Series" he's effectively blown his cover, exposing himself as one of the unwashed and should be dealt with accordingly.

Lance,
There's absolutely nothing like a 240D with a manual. I've driven two of them and they're a blast. Nothing at all like the auto...The only thing any better might be a TD with an OM617.952 and a manual.....jeeze, just talking about this makes me want to go home right now and start working on Marlene's auto=>manual conversion....

Looks sweet. Only minus is the crank windows and electric sunroof. I have an all manual car (stick, sunroof and windows). I love my manual sunroof but at times wish I had electric windows.

Interesting metal tank radiator.

Engine out of an '85? Not possible! But if it checks out , like Randy says $1500 would be a great deal. Why are they always in Texas?

Rick

"Engine out of an '85? Not possible! "

The engine could be out of a "85" but the 6 cyl part sounds bogus unless he installed a 616 & a half

its definately a 4 banger from looking at the pics, he must be mistaken about the 6 cyl. did they even make a 4 cyl in 1985? im guessing he could be wrong about the year of the new motor as well. is there a serial # on the block somewhere so i could tell what year the motor is?

thanks for all your help

Oh, I didnt wait for all those to load, Im on a slow dial up so I didnt see any engine pics.

Actually yesterday I discovered another way to tell what year engine you have, the date is stamped on the rod bearings. This is not a handy way to find out unless you happen to have the engine apart however. There is an engine # on the block, on the drivers side, just below the last glow plug toward the rear. Its kind of in back of the IP. You will need to clean it then give it a little sanding and the numbers will stand out. I think you must call the stealer or your parts guy to know just what year it is, anyway its eaieser than pulling a rod cap

The 240D was imported through "83" but built through 85, I have one, it came into the country via the Netherlands.

just went to look at the car, have 2 questions

looked at the number on the engine below the last glow plug, it was surprisingly very ledgible. last 2 numbers were 84, so im guessing its an 84 engine, guess that could have come out of an 85 model car (im just guessing the last 2 numbers are the right ones, there were no other 8's) is this right?

also, the shifter know doesnt really look like something that belongs in a mercedes, its made of that hard foam rubber stuff and the knob was also upside-down! i think you can see it in the pics. just wondering if this is right.

other than that the car looked good, so im gunna bid on it anyway.

I dont think the "84" in the eng # relates to production year. The shift knob is no problem to change.

I think the 190D's were made in '85, but I don't think anyone's ever tried to put an OM601 into a 123. Looks a lot like a 616 to me. Other than the 601, I don't believe that any 4 cylinder diesels were imported to the U.S. although as someone else mentioned, 616's were sold in Europe as late as '85.

It doesn't really surprise me that the seller doesn't know much about the car, though; it is a dealer trade-in, eh? Maybe they meant that a new engine was installed in '85? (if so, I'd love to hear why)...

i asked the salesman, he didnt know why the engine was switched

concerning the manual transmission:
there is a big clock where you would thing there would be a tach, this is the way the auto 240d's are, but i would think they would put in a tach on the cars that originally came with a manual.
if this is icorrect, forget it, but along with the wierd shifter handle, this makes me think that this car may be a manual conversion i dont really know. hoping you guys do

if theres anyone out there that has a 240d that originally came with a manual, id like to know if you have a tach where the clock is

thanks

I have yet to see a 240D with a tach, unless someone swapped instrument clusters.

In fact, at least on 123's, I think that the tach only came with the turbo 300D's, but I could be wrong there.

Hope that helps...good luck!

Grdenko, no 240D's came with a tach. The shifter looks correct, just installed "backwards." At the current price, if it's not an oil burner, it's a steal.

If you don't get it, TxBill will. If I had the money, I'd snag it myself.
