transmission cooler hose weeping 84 300SD - do they fail often?
 

Well I got the new radiator in and filled it up with gen-u-ine MB antifreeze... did a 25mi drive shakedown.... no overheateing (about what it was before I cracked my other one - don't ask)... checked all the hoses... no leaks, but I noticed the tranmission cooler lines that go from the hard lines near the engine to the bottom of the radiator look to be wet near the ends by the radiator. They are probably the original lines as they had some cracks.

I was very careful with the lines with the radiator swap, but I guess disturbing them made them start to weep (or maybe they already were in that state - hard to know).

Do they fail often? Another thing to tackle I guess.

I had to replace the drivers' side hose on my SD a year or so ago. They're cheap, and easy to do. The new one I got has a spring-like cover over the rubber hose. Looked like a much better hose than the origional.

The original hoses seem to fail shortly after they have been handled. Don't hesitate to change them.

Yeah, they seem to go bad after about 30 years -- replace, or they will spray tranny juice all over the place and leave you with no tranny.

$18 each or so, the new ones are "armored" with the srping so that a broken belt won't cut them.

Be carefull when removing the old ones and installing the new ones make sure you use two wrenches on the fitting on the raditor end...........

I recently replaced both of mine with the new spring-guarded type...definitely worth the $$ and the time, just for your peace-of-mind. New hoses are WAY cheaper than new trannys!

Also, check the little brackets that secure the hard-lines to each side of the engine. A couple of mine had lost the rubber grommets to dry rot, and engine vibration eventually caused them to wear a HOLE in the metal line --:eek:-- and I was pi$$ing tranny fluid all over the ground on TWO different occasions! :( I replaced both of those lines as well, of course, along with the brackets and grommets.

Only if you do what my wife did....

....she tried to pull a parking curb home with her ! Somehow (this could only happen to my wife BTW)she drove into a parking stall and hooked the line over the rebar pin sticking 1" above the curb, backed out , didn't notice the freshly sprayed oil following her around until the car refused to go any further. Hi Mike, that happened 2 weeks AFTER the tranny was rebuilt :eek: ,after I stopped hyperventilating she told me she only got about 2 blocks when it just wouldn't go anymore, so far I've noticed no problems :) .She said "does that springy thing have something to do with the transmission ?"Uh ...yes dear it does, and remember I showed you where the front spoiler is compared to parking curbs ? She's just not a car person , her motto is "silly boys, trucks are for girls"
