240D Engine Swap

I was just wondering if there is any reason I can't swap engines with an automatic 240D of the same vintage? Mine is a manual.
There's a 240D near me that has been sitting for a few years & I'm thinking about stoping by to see if they want to part with it. The body isn't in much better shape than mine, but I'm sure there are pleanty of good parts in it. I'm thinking about taking out that engine & rebuilding it if it needs it & swapping with mine & rebuild that one as needed. That way I have a spare around.

Thanks!

I don't think it should be a problem at all. Go for it.

Cool, Thanks! The only thing I was worried about was the transmition mounting, but I didn't think that would be different.

Since you'll be pulling both the transmission and the engine at the same time, you will have both of them out, and will just swap transmissions before you install the new engine.

Good luck.

McRoth,

I think there may be some issues with the interface with the transmission. I have never done a swap of either the engine or a transmission, but from reading on the site here there seems to be a difference in the interface. Do a search on exchanging a manual for a an automatic, as that is sort of what is going on here (you are putting a manual transmission on an engine that had an automatic, so that should be the same in regard to the interface between engine and transmission as replacing the automatic transmission with a manual one in a given car). I think some special pilot bearing is required for one and not the other. Good luck, Jim

As far as the swap goes, you will need to change the flexplate off the automatic and put the flywheel off of the stick shift car. But, there is another problem, the flywheel and crankshaft are balanced as a unit on these cars, so you may feel some vibrations that weren't there already. Otherwise, it will work fine.
