300SD at 200,000 miles....exactly!

First you have to test the engine.

A bit blurry, but that's 100+mph at 199,711 miles on the odometer.

Then you chat with a friendly cocker who happens along and wants to congratulate you.

I had my camera on a tripod to record the 200,000 mile moment, when an elderly couple pulled over in an RV and this charming American Cocker came by to say hello, just as the delayed action took the picture.

A 200k diesel, a beautiful day in gorgeous Idaho (this is at the Craters of the Moon monument) and a sweet dog. What else could you ask for?

This was in October, 2003.

By the way, the registration is 'Bertie 1', in honor of my fellow mechanic and helper, Bertie the Border Terrier, known to many here from my web site.

And yes, that trip odometer should have read '126', not '124' but this makes up for it - on Highway 126 outside Sisters, OR, a day earlier.

Congratulations, and I agree with John, those needles are looking great! I'm going to give your painting technique a try one of these days.

I wish you many more happy miles of dieseling.
Mike

Congratulations, and yes your dash does look very nice. I'll have to make sure to have my needles looking nice for the special moment for mine here in 13k more miles. If you're willing, I'm sure that car will take you to at least 400k. 200k miles barely has the motor broken in....

Congrats Thomas!

I love to see a Mercedes racking up the miles.

Do you have a particular milestone you'd like to reach in your ownership experience with this car?

Paul - Tombstone (mine), not milestone.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

As this was the car in which I hit 100,000 miles all those years ago with my mum beside me, it was a pretty emotional moment, having lost her earlier this year, and recalling how we both looked forward to this landmark. I like to think she sent that charming little cocker in her place.

Let me make sure I got this right.

You'd like to keep this car until you depart this earth, or you'd like to use this car as your tombstone?

Either way, I'd like to keep up on the accumulated mileage of this car from time to time. This could be very interesting...

Ah, you lucky guy. 100mph. Getting to drive the way these cars were intended. Now that you have the engine broke in, you can start putting some serious miles on it. I hope to see the pictures when you turn 500,000 miles in that car. My 300D is headed towards 400k. Sister-in-law is driving it right now as her car has troubles. My diesel is slow (in city) but it sure keeps going.

Here she is at 100,000

Taken on April 16, 1992 on Pacific Coast Highway in California, between Cambria and Carmel.

Right after I took this, a tourist pulled up to check what all the photography was about. When I showed him the odometer, he started jumping up and down, sharing the moment.
