W123 Headrest Removal

Question to the group:

I have a 1982 240d and want to remove the headrests to install MB sheepskins. The manual shows a "button" to press to release them and yet there is no such button on the outside rear of either seat.

Has anyone experience in how to get these off short of trying to take the seat back off or something like that?

thanks for the assistance.....

It's not exactly a 'button', but more of a depression in the back of the seat right beneath the headrests. You have to have fingers of steel to get them out though!

Yes, the button is hidden under the seatback panel, and is directly in line with one of the steel posts. Not only do you have to have fingers of steel to press it, you also may have to really yank on the headrest at the same time. The three examples I've encountered thus far were all seriously rusted in place.

I'm having no luck doing this... is it better to just pull the seat back off and do it from there?
