Badges

How do you take off/ put back on the trunk badges that tell what model it is?

Im going to take off my 300D 2.5 Turbo and put on E300 TurboDiesel.

How do you do this?

Thanks
Sam

I know on the older cars like mine, you can remove them easily with a wide blade putty knife. The badges have some pins on the back that set into plastic grommets in the car's sheet metal. Make sure you put some tape on the end to avoid scratching the paint.
Yours, though, may be held on with double sided body tape. Those are hard to remove and may take a heat gun to be able to remove them. With a heat gun, you have to be careful not to scorch the paint in the process. It's kind of like a high powered blow drier.

If stuck on with double sided tape it can usually be seen (if you look carefully) between the plasic of the badge and the metal of the body. It will be sandwiched in there and form a seal. If the badge is held on by tabs and gormmets there will be a gap. It has been my experience that the easiest way to remove the tape held badges is to warm the badge and surrounding area with a common blow drier on high until the area is hot to the touch. This softens the adhesive tape. And then use a piece of monofiliment fishing line (30#) to cut between the badge and body. Adding a loop of small tubeing on each end of the "garrot" will prevent cuting into your flesh as well. And pushing a bit to the body side of the tape will make the tape mostly stay with the badge. Don't saw back and forth to vigorously or any dirt caught in the crack may make small scratches...but these should be hidden by the replacement badge.

I have been able to reuse badges by cleaning all the old tape off and custom cutting some new thin double sided foam tape to stick it back on.
