clunk in front end on braking
It isn't there usually on hard braking but is there normally when normally braking. I don't think the car has struts so that wouldn't be it. When I bounce the front end 3 times it doesn't keep bouncing like a car with bad shocks. I know for sure that I need upper control arm bushings. Would that affect the clunk? I want to hopefully fix the clunk while I am doing the bushings which I will lso do balljoints while it is all apart. I am talking about the 1979 300SD. It is a w116 chasis.
Thanks David

Do you also get a clunk or groan going over speed bumps or similar at low speeds? If so, suspect the track rod bushings on the body end of the track rod. Lift the rubber boot to check, chances are you will see if they are bad. This also causes the car to wander on the road, as the control arm can move backwars slightly under pressure (the clunk).
With care, you can remove and replace this bushing (I think the control rod screws into it) by putting a jack between the control arm and frame and pushing it forward for clearance. If that won't work, you must remove the spring. Use great care if you do that, it REQUIRES a high quality internal spring compressor, and if it jumps out, it can easily kill or maim you. Peter
