Diesels run on LPG

Has anyone seen the lastest issue of Land Rover World? They ran an article on a conversion kit sold in the U.K. which converts diesel engines to run compeltely on LPG. Apparently the components are from U.S. sources. LPG is significantly cheaper there than gas or diesel, so the conversions make a lot of sense, but I thought it was interesting for the technical aspect. I think they said the fuel efficiency actually increases, and, of course, emissions are drastically reduced.

I suspect that the longevity of the engine would also be reduced, and probably drastically. It's a matter of trade-offs.

Is this a kit that turns them into a spark engine.... that's how a lot of the Cummins LPG (and Detroit?) engines work I believe.

I believe they are actually injecting the LPG, using it in its liquid form, directly from the injectors. A buddy of mine works at a power generation plant that uses big Waukesha diesels converted to methane. Methane from the landfill suprisingly enough. I will have to ask him how its done. RT

Here in the US there is a show called TRUCKS on
Spiketv.

Last week there was a build up on a 2003
chevy duramax diesel pick up truck.

The person hosting the show added propane
injection and hear this nitrous.

The propane is injected into the airfilter but
it is heated first by way of the trucks heating
system, because it is in liqiud form and it needs
to be in gas form to inject it in the engine.
It came with a updated chip for the computer.
To regulate and increase the fuel flow into the
engine.

I needed to leave at that point so I didn't see
how the nitro was injected into the engine.

The kit is offered by bully dog inc.
I guess it could be addapted for a MB diesel.

Louis.

Upon further investigation I found that there are really two ways to use LPG (exclusively). There are spark ignition engines and also ones that inject it and use compression like a Diesel (as rwthomas1 said), Cummins calls this Westport-Cycle... dunno what other companies call it. Anyway, as GregS stated they are both efficient and clean..... not to mention long lasting.

Lubrication ?

What about the lubrication that I hear is provided by diesel oil ? Exactly what parts are lubricated by the fuel oil ? I hear biodiesel and straight vegetable oil have better lubricity than petro-diesel. Sulfur improves lubrication but causes air pollution...

Lubrication provided by Diesel is in the injection pump and injectors. So that wouldn't be a problem with LPG.... I don't think. I think you're pretty much right on how all those other fuels/components of fuel work Knotman.

Sulphur is not a lubricant and does not improve lubricity. The chemical process to remove sulphur from fuel has the side effect of reducing lubricity.

This is one of our customers at the machine shop I work at:
http://www.energyconversions.com/
They convert railroad engines to run on LPG, as well as boat engines and stationary power generators. BIG stuff.

They just installed a fitting in the intake manifold and the gas was just fumigated in. The injectors did not play a part in this. Also, as far as has been discussed on this board, Mercedes injection pumps (at least those on the 617) are lubricated by engine oil, so the injection pump shouldn't suffer. Lastly, the propane injection system mentioned is just to give the engine a power boost, but this conversion kit I'm talking about is a 100% conversion to LPG. The engine does not run on diesel when the LPG system is switched on. Pretty neat, as long as its set up right I don't know why it would reduce engine life. Seems like engine life would be increased because LPG burns so much cleaner - but I really don't know all the details.

It's actually down to a 15.8 now...
I've got two more things to do:
1. Injection pump (I've got two extras that I'm going to mess with).
2. T-3/T-4 Hybrid.

My guess is about a low to mid 13 in the quarter.
We'll see...

I thought I have seen all the dorky things kids can do to their Diesels. But a blow-off valve!? There should be a limit on how much somebody can defile one of the sacred MB diesels!

300TD - how fast?

So, how fast is your 300?

I see that you're TRYING to get it to go a bit faster (mentioned the intercooler).
Why don't you let us know what it pulls in the quarter?
